Heavy rains and high tide battered Mumbai on Tuesday (29 August 2017) resulting in a flood-like situation across the city.
Heavy rains continued to lash several parts of Mumbai over Monday and Tuesday (29 August 2017) causing flooding and water logging in several parts of the city.
There have been reports of water logging in suburbs such as Matunga West, Mahim, Dadar and Bandra East.
Flights cancelled, roads blocked and schools closed as country's financial capital records more than 100mm of rain.
Heavy monsoon rains have paralysed Mumbai, India's financial hub, flooding streets and disrupting land, air and road traffic.
Dozens of flights and local train services were cancelled on Tuesday as rains drenched the coastal city of nearly 20 million people.
In three hours on Tuesday morning, Mumbai suburbs recorded 86mm of rains, just 2mm short of what was recorded over the previous 24 hours. Some areas have received more than 100mm of rain since Sunday (29 August 2017).
Traffic jams were reported on all major arterial roads, including the Eastern and Western Express Highway, Sion-Panvel highway and LBS Marg as the rains continued since last night.
Suburban services were disrupted with trains on all the three lines – western, central and harbour – running late.
The Indian Meteorological Department had forecast “heavy to very heavy rains” in entire coastal Konkan region of Maharashtra, including Mumbai.
With roads clogged, schools closed early along with some offices, and the evening rush hour saw people wading through knee-deep water on their way home or stuck in stranded vehicles for hours.
The National Disaster Response Force launched a rescue mission with police to evacuate people from low-lying areas.

Many parts of the city are still heavily under water, causing the city of 20 million people to grind to a halt over the last several days.
“People have left their cars on roads, so (removing) them is among our first priority,” said Sudhir Naik, Deputy Municipal Commissioner.
Mumbai Police have taken note of cars and other vehicles left behind and offered free towing service. “If your car is out of fuel/stranded #Diall100 or 8454999999 or tweet us for free towing till the nearest fuel pump or garage #mumbairains,” the Mumbai Police tweet.
Meteorological Department also warned people of a high tide which was expected to hit the city in the late afternoon.
Transport systems were unavailable through parts of the city as trains and roadways were shut. Power was cut-off from various parts of the city to prevent electrocution.

The traffic in Mumbai has come to a standstill owing to the heavy downpour.
Note :
1) India's monsoon season runs from June to September and often causes widespread destruction.
2) Water supply, communication networks and public transportation were totally shut down during the 2005 catastrophe.
3) a dozen people, mainly senior citizens, are reportedly missing in different parts of Mumbai though many are suspected as ‘lost’ or temporarily not able to communicate.
4) Suburban trains to resume service in phases, several long-distance trains cancelled or re-scheduled.

Advice by Mumbai Police : Stay indoors as far as possible. Move out only if it is very important. Due to waterlogged roads, Traffic not moving and slow at most places
Operations at Mumbai airport was also suspended for some time due to low visibility.
This event can be referred in comparison with the 2005 floods in Mumbai which recorded a rainfall 944 mm (37.17 inches) within 24 hours on 26 July 2005.
Navy opens community kitchens and food counters at various locations in Mumbai to provide relief to rain-affected people.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged people in affected areas to be safe and "take all essential precautions in the wake of the heavy rain,"
It is not a flood-like situation because no one needs to be rescued.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), there would be no relief for the state in the coming hours and heavy showers are expected to continue for next 24 hours.
Warning : Heavy water-logging expected in coming hours due to heavy showers coupled with high tide. The city and surrounding areas would continue to receive heavy rainfall over the next 2-3 days.
