Silly news report, but the idea and music and Bobby Warren are great. I say silly because their are Blues in the Schools programs all over the country where blues musicians don't only perform, but teach. It's in LEARNING TO PLAY that deepest benefits of music can be found. Being a musician makes you smarter than normal folks.
But to that school principle, to that community – in the words of George Harrison… beware of darkness.
I'll be very upfront about this. Those kids leave that event and wont think about the Black History, cultural contributions. You see the mass media and amongst themselves they continue, accept the negative Hip Hop imagery and views of African Americans.
You can go deep into certain (not all) hispanic cultures and see appalling, saddening forms of racism that you would not believe. Beware…
I have to say so much about this. Its wonderful what Bobby Warren is doing. I agree its about him sharing a part of himself to others, especially those hispanic kids whose numbers have risen thru parents immigration, but thats a whole other thing.
You're people gave us Jazz, Blues, Rock n Roll, Funk and Gospel. Abandon Hip Hop. Hip Hop destroyed all those things. People like Mr. Warren – have to pass on the tradition that pride so those amazing contributions. But the key is in HOW you teach it. Sure in the context of "history" but also as something relevant as something they can do NOW and in the future.
As a side sad note, first that kid Estrada needs to lose some fat. 2nd, his mannerisms are hip-hoppery, the devil is in the details…
