Love these families and their stories. Thank you for sharing them with us.

@jamzilla1002 February 19, 2025 - 12:31 am

I’m so proud of both of these families!!!

@jamzilla1002 February 19, 2025 - 12:31 am

This is capitalism.

@Tiger-dg3cz February 19, 2025 - 12:31 am

You are only going to live if your high educate or have a social security. I would never defraud them just to have money.

@Tiger-dg3cz February 19, 2025 - 12:31 am

I’m going to try figure out how to adjust to this

@Tiger-dg3cz February 19, 2025 - 12:31 am

God is with you I believe even in the desert or wherever you are living.

@Tiger-dg3cz February 19, 2025 - 12:31 am

Staying alive and just try adding healthcare to that. It doesn’t get better. You start sinking.

I think that this is an excellent documentary. What I gained from it solidified what I learned from my own experiences, which is that sound decision making for your own life is paramount for your success. The other thing is that we put our trust in institutions, government bodies, jobs/supervisors, etc., and usually they do not have our best interest in mind. Their goal is to generate the most money for the institution, company or opportunities for themselves. And lastly, sometimes purchasing a home too soon may not be ideal because you become bound to it, and cannot readily relocate to where jobs are more abundant and secure.

@ramjamflimflam February 19, 2025 - 12:31 am

Neither of these families failed anything. Society fails , governments failed society. When society doesn’t champion parents and protect and defend families it has failed.

@ramjamflimflam February 19, 2025 - 12:31 am

The idea that the US Government or any government gives a shit about any of its citizens is absolutely insane.

27:00 the child whose behaviour and grades nose-dived after his mother started working and they were left in the care of relatives. Today, I hope people would realize that there is probably something amiss with the 'care'. One of the greatest evils of unbridled capitalism is the 'forced' removal of mothers from their homes and the subsequent neglect, and worse still, abuse of children. There is no better carer for children than a competent, loving biological parent. Only if that parent is delinquent or incompetent should young children be farmed out to 'relatives' or other carers.

7:54 side note, why is it that ppl from 30-40 years ago talk different. Like her voice has a distinguished 90s sound. Anyone else agreeâ€Ļeven ppl sound different now lol

@Gman2002 February 19, 2025 - 12:31 am

Things have gotten much worse. Everything is more expensive. Raising a child is incredibly costly. Living expenses have skyrocketed, and even a trip to Disney World is now a hefty price tag. As others have pointed out, it was possible to buy a house on a single salary back in the pre-1990s. However, since salaries haven't kept pace with inflation, many people have been left behind. The ongoing agenda to squeeze the working and middle classes has been apparent since many factory jobs disappeared. The 2008 financial crisis wiped out many people's lifetime savings and stock investments. Imagine losing most of your 401k or being laid off during a recession when you were planning to retire in 2009 after working for 35 to 45 years. The COVID-19 pandemic has caused a significant shake-up in livability. Homes that were once affordable are no longer within reach. Borrowing money has become expensive, and you can't even find a modest apartment in a safe neighborhood on a McDonald's salary. Pensions are disappearing in favor of self-managed 401k and 403b plans. Who's to say if another 2008 fiasco happens when you're about to retire?

As a 40-something-year-old millennial I always tell the young folks to get your education in a field where you have the potential to make a lot of money and you enjoy doing as early as possible and live below your means and save/invest 10% of your income no matter if you're making minimum wage.

This paints a perfect picture of how its a “Everyman for themselves” or “Dog eat Dog” world.

@percyastronautstatus.8780 February 19, 2025 - 12:31 am

Imagine all the women out here who DONT have a man like Stanley and doing it all on their own with no man to help ???

@yolanda007 February 19, 2025 - 12:31 am

Glad to see this documentary thanks frontline pbs.

@Gman2002 February 19, 2025 - 12:31 am

Thank you, PBS, for the 2024 follow-up. I watched the original video a few years ago which ended around 2008 timeframe of how the families were doing and it has left a lasting impression on me. I often turn to it for motivation, as it powerfully illustrates the significance of effective money management and the importance of living within one's means. The video captures the raw and unfiltered realities of life’s ups and downs, highlighting how financial choices can greatly influence our experiences. It serves as a poignant reminder that being mindful of our finances can provide stability in turbulent times and foster a healthier relationship with money. Please do a 2030 version of the same families.

Life is tough and is unexpected and I hope this video inspires others like myself to better themselves.

Trying to find the Stanley’s social media page or gofundme. I can’t find it anywhere and the Facebook page looks fake. Can anyone assist?

@teresasmith6203 February 19, 2025 - 12:31 am

@rosesarered2285 February 19, 2025 - 12:31 am

What amazing journalism here!!!

@allhandsonsteamdeck1440 February 19, 2025 - 12:31 am

I love this documentary. both families are what I call true Americans black and white dealing with life's real problems over a 20 year period really shows how time flies and how 'the American dream' is a twisted lie

@myezecky7422 February 19, 2025 - 12:31 am

Like Keith, I decided at some point that I wouldn't have kids until I knew that I could maintain a middle class lifestyle on my own. I'm 68 now and I never had them. I, too, saw too many struggles around me.

@ZanaRahman February 19, 2025 - 12:31 am

Karissa gardening like her dad đŸ˜ĸ

@ZanaRahman February 19, 2025 - 12:31 am

The stanleys biggest investment they made was everything they put in their kids ❤ I also feel for the neumanns but they also did the best and tried their best. I can’t imagine another doctor that can do what this does. The faith kept both families going. What’s sad is that the world isn’t much better now and everyone is struggling in this silent depression

@ZanaRahman February 19, 2025 - 12:31 am

The navy Stanley đŸ˜ĸ hearing him answer that phone made me so emotional for some reason but so proud. Hope Allah protects all these protects and the children ❤ and the makers of this documentary

@alextownsend9260 February 19, 2025 - 12:31 am

I’m in my thirties and seen many documentaries but this truly is such outstanding work. Also it broke my heart when jackie said she was a failure. I don’t think she understands just how much her children love her.

@temmietaft2552 February 19, 2025 - 12:31 am

I really enjoyed this. Thanks for sharing.

@DeeProductions-rz3kp February 19, 2025 - 12:31 am

MS. STANLEY I've only known you for 2 hrs from this doc, and I don't consider you a failure at all! Strong willed, beautiful, independent & faithful wife, mother, community leader & entrepreneur, you are inspiring more people than you know from how you carry yourself & navigate life. I know we all judge ourselves harder than others do, but believe me, we see the hard work, dedication, love & passion you put in everything you do & that is a well earned SUCCESS!!

@woodartcful February 19, 2025 - 12:31 am

Great documentary ❤

@cortmahan6354 February 19, 2025 - 12:31 am

@alexjonesjefferson February 19, 2025 - 12:31 am

The rich keep getting richer everyday by spending like the poor and consistent investment, why the poor remains poor by spending like the rich without any sound investment

@reneeblue8576 February 19, 2025 - 12:31 am

I don’t understand, why didn’t she go to school or get a trade while her children are in school?

@tgrant6518 February 19, 2025 - 12:31 am

Renting another apartment just for an office is just not smart at all.

@shantelleholden9182 February 19, 2025 - 12:31 am

Amazing documentary! Breaks my heart that the one mom felt like a failure, but you raised your children to be hard working and you and your husband endured and stuck together. That is real success!

@Brutahlawl February 19, 2025 - 12:31 am

This is what empire decline looks like on the ground. Years and years of debasing your currency and people losing purchasing power, politicians building a country’s economy around the interests of multimillionaires and billionaires, and the subsequent wealth gap growing out of control – this is what you’re left with. A life where regular people become increasingly incapable of meeting their basic needs while the rich continue to get richer.

@Briannas_busted_Benz_shocks February 19, 2025 - 12:31 am

I loved that all the Stanley children seemed to be doing well. Looks like all the children recognize how hard their parents worked to provide for them.

@Heyyou513 February 19, 2025 - 12:31 am

Jackie youre not a failure.. You did a great job

@100Dunbar February 19, 2025 - 12:31 am

The sad reality of majority of US citizens todayâ€Ļit will only get worstâ€Ļ..

@Peachy-keen-y1b February 19, 2025 - 12:31 am

I was thrilled to see this on my feed. I remember these people from the 1st documentary. I always wondered what happened to them. Another one is the family from the Farmers Wife documentary.
